Our charity partnership

Every settlement funds five nights of housing

LP Advisory partners with We Are Mobilise, an Australian charity working to end homelessness. For every client we take through to settlement, buying or selling, we fund five nights of accommodation for someone experiencing homelessness or at risk of it.

Why we wanted a charity partnership

We work in property every day. We help people buy homes, sell homes and build wealth through property. It sits uncomfortably with us that, at the same time, there are people in this city without the most basic version of that: a warm, safe place to sleep.

Everyone should have a safe place to sleep. That is the whole reasoning, and it is not more complicated than that.

Homelessness does not look the way most people picture it. It is not only the person sleeping rough in the city. It is mums and kids. It is women sleeping in cars after leaving family violence. It is someone who has lost a partner or a parent, and the household income with them. It is people who were managing fine until one thing went wrong. Often the difference between staying housed and not is a small amount of money at exactly the right time.

We are a small business, not a large corporate, but we would rather do something real and consistent than nothing at all. We also wanted a partnership rather than a one-off donation, something ongoing that our clients and our network can see and get behind with us.

“Everyone should have a warm, safe place to sleep. That’s it. That’s the reason.”

Five nights of housing, every settlement

Funded through We Are Mobilise’s verified network of housing providers

What this means in practice

The pledge applies to our full service engagements, buyer advocacy and vendor advocacy. Every time we take a client all the way through to settlement, we also fund five nights of accommodation for someone else, through We Are Mobilise’s verified network of housing providers.

We also invite our clients to come with us. When you work with LP Advisory, you have the option to co-contribute alongside us, so your own property milestone helps house someone else as well.

Why we chose Mobilise

As a property business, we wanted a charity that works the way we understand things should work.

The money moves quickly and it goes to a specific outcome. A bond, rent in advance, rent arrears, paid directly to housing providers. That is often the difference between someone keeping a roof over their head or losing it. It is practical, and it is housing. We know exactly what a bond or a rent advance unlocks for a person, because it is the language we work in every day.

We can also see where the money goes. Mobilise tracks funding through to the outcome, so it is not money disappearing into general revenue, it is a measurable number of nights housed. And rather than duplicating services that already exist, Mobilise funds a network of more than 50 specialist homelessness charities already doing the work on the ground, across every state and territory.

The problem is far bigger than any one business. Mobilise’s model means a modest, consistent contribution still translates into something real.

“Homelessness isn’t only the person you see on the street. It’s mums, it’s kids, it’s women in cars who’ve left a violent home.”

Why this matters to us personally

Lou’s parents fled the former Yugoslavia in 1967, on their second attempt to get out. They trekked through the mountains into Italy on foot with two young children, a journey that took a month. They lost children along the way, twins in Yugoslavia and a third child who died in the refugee camp in Italy. They spent 18 months in that camp before they were able to leave, and eventually made their way to Australia by ship, docking at Port Melbourne.

From there, with nothing behind them, they worked to give their children a safe and stable home. That is the reason the family had a future here.

Lou has spent close to thirty years helping other people secure a home. His parents’ experience is a large part of why that work means something to him beyond a transaction. A safe place to sleep is where everything else in a person’s life starts.

“My parents arrived here with nothing and were given a chance. Everything my family has came after that.”
